DUNCAN, William
, b. 1818 in Scot.; d. 1891, came at 16 years of age to Canada with
his
parents and helped his father clear the farm. He learned masonry, and used to
work in Hamilton and Dundas in summer, and chop on the farm in winter. He was
a well educated man, of good taste, as is evidenced by a row of maple tress
which he planted nearly around his farm and bordering the lane. He was School
Trustee and Tp. Councillor for over 20 years; Deputy Reeve for 3 years;
President Puslinch Mutual Fire Ins. Co.; President of the creamery at the
Model Farm; one of the first Presidents of Puslinch Agr. Soc., and J.P. for
years. He was widely known as Squire McFarlane. He was a Presbyterian and a
strong Liberal, being President of the Puslinch Tp. Reform Assoc. He m. Janet
Taylor, whose family came in in 1821. Issue: Mrs. Ed. Kingsbury, d. 27; Annie
d. California; John, in California; George and Duncan, in Dakota; Mrs. Robert
Amos, Guelph Tp.; Mrs. Chris. Little, Puslinch; Mrs. (Rev.) John Little,
Holstein, Grey Co.; Isabella, d. infancy; Mrs. George Orr, in California;
Mrs. John Philips, B.C., and Robert J., on the homestead.
