DUNBAR, Joseph
(d.), was b. Rothesay Isle, Bute, Scot., 1806, where he
learned the weaver's trade, but becoming dissatisfied with it he learned the
milling business (principally oat meal), and went to for a couple of years,
he entered a cotton mill as engineer. In 1842 he came to Canada, and was
nearly six weeks in crossing on the Renfrewshire from Glasgow to Quebec. He
came to Guelph and worked for nearly three years, as a miller in Allan's
mill, and then went to Elora where he had charge of Charles Allan's oatmeal
mill and flour mills. In 1844 he bought 100 acres lot 15, con. 2,
Pilkington, which his sons cleared and worked. About 1851 he retired to the
farm permanently, and d. there in 1879, age 73. Mr. Dunbar was a
Presbyterian and a Liberal, taking an active part in elections. He was a
Trustee of his school section for six years, and was appointed J.P., but
never accepted the office.
He m. Isabella Stewart, who d. in 1878, age 69. Of his family: Peter is retired to Guelph City; Henry and Thomas are in Carmen, Man.; Archibald, b. Guelph, 1842, was raised in Pilkington and m. Ellen Harrison, dau. of the late William Harrison, of Pilkington. He for a time rented a farm, and subsequently purchased lots 28 and 29, con. 3 D., Guelph, where he farms on an extensive scale, being one of the substantial and progressive men of the section.
