DRYDEN Family . The founder of this family, in Canada, was the late Thomas Dryden, b. Jedburgh, Scot. He was a plowman in Scot., and m. Margaret Scott, who was b. at Jedburgh Castle. He left Scot., with his family, in 1827. They were thirteen weeks in crossing the ocean, and stopped in New York State for about a year, where leaving his family, Mr. Dryden started out to look for land. He came to Eramosa, and purchased 100 acres, lot 15, con. 2, and later 100 acres additional, lot 15, con. 1. He brought his family and set. in the bush. Bears were numerous, and Indians camping in the vicinity were a familiar sight to the pioneers. Although he started without means, he became successful, and acquired a fine property. Re was a member of the Presbyterian church, and in politics a strong Liberal. His widow still survives. Issue: Mrs. John Wood, d.; Mrs. William Forsythe, d.; George, Mrs. (Rev.) R. Torrance of Guelph; Mrs. J. B. Armstrong, d., Guelph; William, Thomas, and Mrs. William Paterson, d., of Flint, Mich.

George. b. 1830, just before the family reached Canada, d. 1892, age 61. He was raised on the old homestead, in Eramosa, and in 1853, m. Jane Fingland, and purchased lot 17, con. 2, Eramosa, where he lived until his death. His widow still survives. While he never sought or held municipal office, he was a strong Liberal, and took a healthy interest in all questions pertaining to the welfare of the country, and especially of the Tp. of Eramosa. As a successful citizen, he stood in the first rank, and was a man of strict integrity. Issue: Thomas Jr., Dr. James R., Mrs. James Kennedy, Guelph; Mrs. John Farrish, St. Paul, Minn.; Dr. George, Marissa, Ill., who has large mining interests as well as a large practice; Mrs. Wm. A. Armstrong, Eramosa, and William B. Dryden, on the homestead. Of his branch, Thomas Jr., m. Isabella Fairburn, and set. W. Garafraxa, where he owns and successfully farms 200 acres. He was Councillor for years. Reeve, and County Commissioner. Issue: Jennie, Maggie, George, Dr. James R., is a practicing physician in Guelph city. He m. Jennie Storey. Issue: Arthur, Gordon, and Norman. William B. m. Minnie Brooks, dau. of the late John Brooks, and niece of James J. Hill. He owns and lives on the old John Dryden homestead, in Eramosa, and successfully farms 200 acres. William, m. Elizabeth Mair of W. Garafraxa, and set. near Paisley, Ont., where he was a large and successful farmer. Thomas, Sr., m. Ann Forsyth, and set. in Guelph city, in 1888. Issue: Wilbert, and Laura.
