DREW, George Alexander , (d.) was b. near the village of Williamstown, in the county of Glengarry, Ont., on the 28th of February, 1827, and was the son of John Drew and Margaret (nee McKay), and a grandson of a United Empire Loyalist, who was a Highland Scotchman by birth. He was educated at the Grammar Schools at Williamstown and Cornwall, and studied law at the latter place under the late Hon. John Sanfield Macdonald. He was called to the Bar in 1854, and in 1855, commenced the practice of his profession at Elora, where he resided from that time until his death.

On the 18th December, 1872, he was created a Queen's Counsel, and on the 23rd May, 1882, was appointed Senior Judge of the County Court of the County of Wellington, and on the 27th June, following, was appointed Lord Judge of the High Court. He was also Chairman of the General Sessions of the Peace, and Judge of the Surrogate Court for the County of Wellington. He died at Elora, on the 5th July, 1891.

In politics he was a Conservative, and enjoyed the confidence and friendship of the late Sir John A. Macdonald, of whom he was a staunch supporter. In 1867, in the first general elections after confederation, he was elected M.P., for the North Riding of Wellington, and was re-elected for the same constituency in 1878. He retired from politics on the dissolution of Parliament, in 1882.

In 1856, he m. Elizabeth Mary, eldest daughter of the late John Jacob, of Port De Grave, Newfoundland, and she having died, he m., in 1865, Maria Louisa, second daughter of the said John Jacob. By the last marriage, there were three children, John J., Elizabeth M., now the wife of George M. Gibbs, and Hannah B. G., now the wife of Frederick W. Hudson.

John J. Drew, was b. at Elora on the 19th April, 1866, and was educated at the Public and High Schools of Elora and at Upper Canada College. He studied law at Guelph with his present partner, A. H. Macdonald, K.C., for a time, and later with the firm of Blake, Lash & Cassels, of Toronto. He was called to the Bar in 1891, and practiced his profession in Toronto till November of 1892, when he returned to Guelph, where he practiced alone till September of 1895, when the present firm of Macdonald & Drew, was formed. He served three years in the City Council as Alderman. In 1904, he was elected President of the Liberal-Conservative Association for South Wellington, which office he now holds.

On the 10th May, 1893, he m. Annie I. S., daughter of Malcolm Gibbs of Toronto, by which marriage there are four children, George A. G., Isabelle L. G., Dorothy A. G., and Elizabeth H. G.

He is a member of the Church of England.
