DOWNEY, John
, late of Peel, was b. in Co. Kerry, Ire., and d. in 1875, at the age of
96. He came to Canada in 1853, settling first in Guelph, and a year later in
Peel. He was a Roman Catholic, and a Conservative, and was greatly esteemed. He
was successful in his undertakings, and left 150 acres of land. He m. Johanna
Casey, who d. in 1855. Issue: James, John, set. in California; Richard
and Maurice.
James, came to Peel Tp. in 1855, and d., in 1904, at the age of 82. He m. Catharine Maloney. Issue: John, in Cal.; Richard, Maurice, and Mrs. Thos. Costen, set. in Peel. Richard, owns the farm of 100 acres on lot 12, con. 8, Peel, where he has resided for 18 years, having lived in the Western States for three years previously. He paid $3,500 for his farm, which is now worth double that amount. He is engaged in mixed farming, and is prosperous and highly respected. He is a Roman Catholic, and a Liberal. He m. Katherine Welch, in 1888. Issue: Hannah L., attending High School at Parry Sound; May F., in Drayton High School, and J. J., in the Public School. A very clever family, passing all their examinations with credit. Maurice owns the old homestead of 150 acres on lots 14 and 15, con. 11, where he carries on mixed farming. He m. Ellen Troy.
