DOWLING, John
. (d.), was the pioneer of the Dowling family in West Garafraxa, and came from
County Wicklow, Ire., about 1856, and set. first 3 miles from Stratford. His
wife's maiden name was Mary Shane, and they were m. in the old country. From
near Stratford, they moved to Nichol Tp., and about 1862, to West Garafraxa,
where they permanently set. on lot 31, con. 2. Mr. Dowling d. March, 1897, age
70.
Of his family: Frederick J., second son, owns and occupies the homestead, and his mother resides with him. In addition, he owns and farms the east half of lot 31, con. 1, immediately opposite. Since his father's death, he has made many valuable improvements, among them the erection of a new modern residence. He has not taken an active part in public life, but is a member of the L. 0. L., and I. 0. 0. F. In 1901, he m. Miss Margaret A., dau. of William and Mary Shaw, who reside near Metz. Issue: Mary G., and William J. Thomas R., another son of the pioneer, John Dowling, owns and operates the next farm but one to the homestead, consisting of 135 acres, on lot 33, con. 2, of which the former owner was Alfred Short, and the original owner Thomas Garvin. It is a fine farm, and since it came into Mr. Dowling's possession, he has improved it by building one of the largest, and most modern barns to be found in the township. In 1900, he m. Miss Eleanor Weeks, dau. of Alexander Weeks, who, m. Ellen Astleford, and was one of the first inhabitants of Arthur Village, where he now resides. Mr. Dowling has one dau. Gladys. The Dowlings have always been staunch Conservatives, and mainly adherents to the Church of England. A legacy of £8,000 was left to Albert D., the youngest son of John Dowling, by his uncle, Thomas Dowling of Ire., who had no heirs of his own. Albert Dowling, whose wife is a sister of Mrs. F. J. Dowling, resides in Aurora, and is the only one of the family residing out of the county. The pioneer daughters of John Dowling, were: Mrs. John Walker, West Garafraxa; Mrs. John H. Shaw, West Garafraxa, and Mrs. Charles C. Lawrence, Peel Tp. The Dowlings have always been noted for their thrift, industry and integrity, and while being progressive farmers, have never sought office in the public life of the township and county.
