DOUSLIN, Ralph
(d.), was b. Yorkshire, Eng., in 1781, d. 1861, age 80. The
late Ralph Douslin, was in the militia at the time of the Battle of
Trafalgar, after which they returned to domestic pursuits. He was a farmer
in Eng., where he m. Elizabeth Thorp, who d. age 80. In 1842, they came,
with their family to Canada, and set. in Toronto. They had the following
issue: Roger, Mrs. David Reed, Jane, d.; Robert, who set. in Pickering;
Richard, d., and Thomas, who , went to Australia. Roger, the eldest son, was
b. in Yorkshire, Eng., in 1824, and was 18 years old when he came to Canada
with his parents. His cash capital, when he arrived in Canada, was 50c. He
remained in Toronto a year, when he started out on his own account, and in
1861, came to Peel Tp., and lived for some time on the 12th concession. He
later bought his present farm of 150 acres, on the town line, "Creekbank,"
where he has since resided. He m. Elizabeth Miller, dau. of Isaac Miller of
U.E.L. stock, of York County. Issue: Sarah J., Thomas, d.; Mary E.. Henry,
Richard, Archibald, Mrs. John Howlett, and Lewis. Of this family, Henry and
Archibald, are successful farmers in the N. W., while Richard and Lewis,
operate the home farm. As will be seen, Roger Douslin, from a very small
beginning, through his industry and good management, became one of the most
successful and influential citizens of the district. He never sought or held
municipal office; is a man of strong convictions, and has opinions on every
subject. He is a member of the Methodist church, and in politics a Liberal.
