DONALDSON, Geo. Y.
is a son of the late Ralph Donaldson. one of the pioneers
of Stratford, who came to Canada in 1855, from Edinburgh, Scotland, and set.
in Stratford, where the subject of our sketch was b. He received his
education in the Public and High Schools of Stratford, and obtained his first
office experience with Mr. D. B. Burritt, Clerk of the Division Court in
Stratford. After that, he was in J. W. Scott's bank, at Listowel, for 15
years. In 1897, he came to Palmerston, where he has since been Manager of
the office of J. W. Scott & Son, bankers, the pioneer bank of Palmerston. He
was several years on the Board of Management, and is, at present, an Elder
and S. S. Superintendent in the Presbyterian church. In politics, he does
not take an active part in party affairs. He was a member of the Council of
Palmerston, in 1903 and 1904. Mr. Donaldson took an active part in the
Council of Palmerston during this term, when a number of matters of great
public interest and importance to the town, were disposed of among them, the
question of the acceptance of the Carnegie bequest for a public library,
which, after much opposition, was decided favourably, and a handsome and
commodious building erected. Other important matters were, the purchasing of
the electric plant for municipal purposes, and the making of favourable terms
with the G. T. R., in various matters effecting the welfare of the town. In
1888, he m. Annie Paton of Elma Tp., niece of the late Mr. David Paton,
contractor of Montreal, and of Mr. Geo. Sutberland, conveyancer of Listowel,
Ont. Issue: two daughters, Flora, and Erland.
