DONALDSON, Duncan
(d.), b. in Perthshire, Scot., in 1800. and was raised and
educated there. In the early thirties, he emigrated to Quebec, and set. in
Megantic Co., where he purchased 200 acres of land. He m. Mary A. Hancock,
dau. of Thomas Hancock, also a Megantic pioneer, and they had a large family,
all of whom were born and raised on the Megantic farm. Here, Duncan
Donaldson, and his wife, spent the remainder of their days. Only two of the
family came to Minto, viz: Peter, and Thomas. The former, in 1877, and the
latter, in 1870. Peter m. Charlotte Hutchinson, in Leeds, Megantic Co., and
in the spring of 1870, came to Hamilton, and seven years later moved to
Minto, purchasing 100 acres, lot 20, con. 17, where he resides. He is a
leading and respected man in Minto. He has seven sons and one daughter
living, viz: Duncan Jr., who resides on con. 18, Minto; John, merchant, Grand
Forks, B. C.; William, teacher, Collegiate Institute, Petrolea; Robert,
Minto; Peter, and Mrs. George Smith, B. C.; James, and Stephen, who assist
their father on the homestead.
Duncan Donaldson, Jr., whose portrait appears on another page of this work, m. Rachel Henry, nee Howse, and is an extensive farmer, and leading citizen of Minto. Issue: Hutchinson; d. age 7; Orilla, Myrtle, William W., and Joseph D. A. Thomas Donaldson, m. Mary Nutbrown, in Megantic Co., and came west to Hamilton, in 1864, and in 1870, came to Minto, purchasing lot 22, con. 17, where he has since lived. Issue: Peter D., and Thomas G., successful farmers in Minnesota; Mrs. William Hindes, Harriston; Mrs. Allen Porterfield, Howick; Mrs. Frank Porterfield, Howick; John H., James A., Simon, David W., Louisa, Sarah, and Margaret, at home.
