DERBY, John , b. Dumriesshire, Scot.,1832, where he was raised and educated, later learning the blacksmiths trade. He followed this trade in Scot., and came to Canada in 1853 and set. in Waterloo Co. In 1858 he moved over to the "Corners" in the "Paisley Block," where he worked at his trade in conjunction with the farm which he purchased in 1880, until 1900, when he retired from active life, and turned the farm over to the management of his son William A.

John Derby is one of the best known men in the section. The men of the older generation all knew and did business with him, while those of the next generation who own the farms today, visited the shop as boys to get their father's horses shod, and for other work in his line. He is a well read man, and not only the current news of the day, but general topics were discussed by him with his many customers and friends, who went there to be entertained. He always had a fund of knowledge to impart, and neither the youth or the middle aged men of the section failed to drop into the "shop" when passing. He m. Catherine Wilkinson, of Puslinch, who d. 1877, age 36. Issue: Mrs. Wm. Newstead, Andrew (d. age 35) ; Mrs. John O. Cleghorn, Agnes, Mrs. Wm. Anderson, William A. and Mrs. John P. Henderson.

William A., m. Catharine McIntosh, dau. of the late Alex. McIntosh, and runs the home farm (120 acres). Issue: John, Jr., Alexander, Neil and William H.
