DAVIDSON, Joseph
. While not one of the very first pioneers in Minto, came
here in 1860 - six years after the "land sale." The country was very new even
then, although the pioneer axe had made clearings in different parts of the
township, and some of the principal roads had been cut out. Young Davidson
first purchased a farm in the tenth concession, which he afterwards sold and
bought another farm near Pike Lake. The latter farm he kept about a year, and
then purchased his present farm in con. 8, where he has since resided. Joseph
Davidson was b. in Forfarshire, Scot., in 1837, and educated there,
emigrating to Canada when he was seventeen years old. He worked at the
saddlery business for some time, and afterwards concluded to turn his
attention to farming. His brother, Charles Davidson, of the old firm of Field
and Davidson, saddlery hardware merchants, Hamilton, and for many years in
the smelling of business in Toronto, had preceded him some time and became on
the best known men in this line in Ontario. Joseph Davidson came to Canada
and started life with youth, pluck and energy as his sole capital, and the
fine property that he has acquired on the eighth con. Is the result of well
directed efforts. He is a man of strong convictions and strict integrity, and
is a popular citizen. In politics he is a Liberal, and he is a member of the
Presbyterian church. His oldest son, Charles, is in the employ of the C.M. &
St. P. Ry., while Donald assists on the farm. The latter is a
con-commissioned officer in No. 1 Co. 30th Regiment, and takes an active
interest in military matters.
