DALE, Matthew . Born in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1832. He came to Canada in 1854, with his parents and settled on the O.S.R. (Owen-Sound Road…..I believe.) About 10 acres were cleared on the lot, and there were no roads, but blazed paths through the bush. His father died after they arrived in the country. Mr. Dale, being the youngest son, had to look after the homestead. (This is how it is written but I think they meant the eldest son.) In 1868, he m. Catharine Brown, and purchased his farm of 110 acres, Lot 11, O.S.R. of which about 30 acres were cleared. He completed the clearing and improved the place. He now owns 200 acres of land and in a high state of cultivation. He resides on Lot 3, Concession 8, and carries on mixed farming, raising thoroughbred cattle. He is a typical Scotchman, much respected, whose word is as good as his bond, and never was sued in his life. He is a Liberal, and a Presbyterian. Issue: Andrew, Mount Forest; Lizzie died at 30; Neil, Joseph (who died at 27), Mary, at home; Kate, in Toronto and John (died at 20). Neil, unmarried, works with his father, and lives on the homestead.
