CROMAR, Robert
(d.). The late Robert Cromar, of Pilkington, was b. in 1814, in the parish of
Slains, Aberdeenshire, Scot., where he and his father before him were millers.
He came to Canada in 1836, landing at Quebec, after a voyage of nine weeks and
two days; continuing the journey by boat to Hamilton, and by ox teams through
the bush to Galt and Pilkington. He took up and cleared the farm of 158 acres
on lots 7 and 8, con. 1, where he lived until his death in 1892., He was a
Manager of the Pres. church, and a Liberal. He held the office of Dep. Reeve
one year, and was Councillor and Clerk of the Township for over 25 years. In
1850 he m. Elizabeth Day, who was b. in 1823, in the Island of Corfu, in the
Mediterranean. Her father was a military man. Mrs. Cromar died in 1906, and at
the time of her death was one of the oldest inhabitants of the township. Issue:
Alexander E., m. Mary Gray, and set. in Pilkington; Mrs. Robert Fisher, set. in
Assiniboia; Mrs. Geo. Cumming, set. in Pilkington; Robert (d.), Emily (d.),
George F., Mrs. Enoch Armstrong, set. in Manitoba; James C. (d.), Henry O., m.
Annie Anderson, set. in Beaverton, and Mrs. Geo. Renton, set. in London, Ont.
George F. Cromar was b. on the old homestead, where he still lives. He follows mixed farming, keeping grade cattle and Yorkshire hogs. He is a Presbyterian, and a Liberal.
