CRANE, James
(d.). This respected old citizen was b. in Suffolk, Eng., 1818, and d. on his
Puslinch farm in 1900. He was raised and educated in Eng., and there followed
farming, being a man of great physical strength, and an expert plowman. He m.
Elizabeth Cady in Eng. She d. in 1902, age 81. Her father fought at the battle
of Waterloo, and saw Napoleon surrender. The late James Crane came to Canada
with his family in 1852, and settled in Waterloo Co., and in 1865 came to
Puslinch, where he purchased 170 acres and here settled. He was an
exceptionally well read man, and a good judge of stock and their ailments,
becoming very useful in the community on account of this knowledge. He was a
class leader in the Meth. church, and was one of the founders of "Howitt's
church," where he regularly attended. They had the following issue: Robert and
Mrs. William Green, b. in England; John C., James A., Mrs. John McAninch,
George C., Mrs. William Lester, Mrs. George Wood, and Alfred C., b. in Canada.
Robert, b. Suffolk, Eng., 1846, m. first Maria O'Donnell. Issue: James, John, Albert, Mary A., Elizabeth, Alfred, George, Thomas (d.), and Harry. His second wife, Susan Sibell. He owns the old homestead, "Fairbank Farm," in Puslinch. In politics he is a Liberal. He was in the Wellington Rifles, also artillery. John C., b. Waterloo Co., 1852, m. first Elydia J. Husband. Issue: Grace and Alice J. Second wife, Mary E. Husband. Issue: Frank, Mary and Gladys. He came to Puslinch in 1865, and to Guelph Tp. in 1881, when he purchased "Forest House" farm, where he has since lived and owns 200 acres. He has taken an active interest in military matters, serving in Wellington Field Battery for years. He was in the Guelph Tp. Council, 1904-5, and is a Methodist, and a Liberal. James A. m. Elizabeth Kirkland; both are deceased. Issue: Ida, Greta, and Alice. George C. m. Hannah Lester, set. Guelph City. Issue: Sarah A., Ethel, May and Hattie. Alfred C. m. Ann Harmer, set. Halton Co.
