COWAN, William
(d.), b. Roxburghshire, Scot., 1819. He received a fair education
in Scotland, which was supplemented through life by special studies and
extensive reading. Among other things he acquired Latin, Hebrew and Greek,
becoming proficient in each. In 1836, he came to Canada and settled on the
"Paisley Block." He worked two years in Allan's mill, and in 1842 commenced
teaching school in the old S.S. No. 5, Guelph Tp., where he taught
continuously for twenty-five years, with the exception of teaching one year in
the Grammar School, Guelph. He purchased his farm of eighty acres, lot 7,
con. 3, Guelph Tp., about the time he commenced teaching, thus making a home
for his parents, who joined him and lived there until their death. The late
William Cowan was a born teacher, and had a reputation in this line almost
without a parallel in Wellington Co. The youth of the older generation of the
"Paisley Block," as well as pupils from a distance, attended this school, and
many men who made reputations in after life attribute it to his tutorship. He
was one of the best of citizens, kindly and generous. In the Presbyterian
church he was active, and for over fifty years conducted the Bible class in
the "Paisley Block." He passed away in 1892, aged 73 years. In 1868 he m.
Elizabeth McSorley. She and three children, William, John and Helen, are
living.
