a railroad contractor as time keeper. He then went to Guelph and worked for
some years as a railroad section man. In 1857 he took up his present farm, 100
acres, lot 19, con. 1, Arthur. There was not a settler on the line at that
time, and he was obliged to carry his furniture about half a mile, as there

doors or windows the first night and had to keep a fire in the old fashioned
bur stove to keep the wolves away. He cleared and logged his farm with one
horse. He has been one of the most successful men in this part of the country,
and is a man of great personal activity, having at 80 years of age followed
his team at the last fall plowing, and "shocked" after the binder in harvest
time. He has acquired his property by hard work, and by business ability. He
is a member of the English church and a Conservative. He m. Sarah J.
