CORBITT, James
(d.), was born in Co. Cavan, Ire., and d. in 1904, age 83. He came to Canada
the year of the great comet, and rented a farm in Darlington Tp., and worked
it, and then after renting a farm with his brother Charles for five years, came
to Maryborough, and purchased 200 acres, lot 5, con. 13, later dividing with
his brother Charles, and reserving the south half for himself. Not a tree had
been chopped on it, and he cleared it and lived upon it until his death. He was
a member of the English church and a Conservative. He m. Margaret Heron. Issue:
Mrs. Robert Swarbrick, Maryborough; Mrs. Robert Gamble, Maryborough; James,
Peel; Samuel, Jacob, Maryborough; Frederick (d.), and Robert on the homestead.
Samuel owns 100 acres, lot 1, con. 11. He m. Mary Ellen Fotheringham. Jacob, b. on the homestead in 1865, worked for seven years in the G.T.R. at Palmerston. In 1892 he started a farm of 30 acres on the west half of east half of lot 2, con. 12, later, bought the adjoining 50 acres on which John Patterson had lived for 40 years. He has been Assessor of the township for 5 years; is a member of the English church, and a strong Conservative. He m. Lavina Johnston, of Wallace. Issue: Lily and Annie W.
