COOKMAN, John
(d.). Cookman, John, b. London, Eng., 1814; d. 1870, age 56. He came to
Canada in 1843, settling first in Erin Tp. and removed to Peel in 1851,
purchasing 50 acres near Glenallan. Mr. Cookman was a well-to-do man in Eng.,
but brought very little money with him to Canada. He purchased his land from
the Canada Co. before leaving, and upon his arrival found it a wilderness.
Unaccustomed to hard work, he soon found that he had undertaken an up-hill
fight, and did not carry it on a great while. He was appointed first Clerk of
the Division Court at Glenallan, and held the office for some years, until
the removal of the court to Drayton. Shortly after he was stricken with
paralysis, and after two years, d. in 1870, at Glenallan. He was of good
English stock, a sterling man, and highly respected. His religious
affiliations were of the English church, and in politics he was a Liberal. He
m. Sophia Godwin, who d. in 1880, age 83. Issue: Mrs. Jas. Kingston, Mrs.
James Wakefield (d.) ; Mrs. Jas. Miller, John, Mrs. Geo. Mellis, Mrs. Geo.
Vadey, Catharine, and James. James, m. Miss Smith, and, lives in Glenallan.
John, b. in England in 1833. He purchased his present farm of 100 acres, lot
1, con. 3, Peel, where he now resides. He carries on mixed farming, and feeds
cattle for market. In former years he exhibited successfully at various
fairs. Mr. Cookman started without means, and is now a prosperous, up-to-date
farmer, highly respected in the community. He belongs to the English church,
and is a liberal. He m. Sarah Bailey. Issue: George, m. Miss Smith, set. in
Peel; Mrs. John Chambers, Isaac (d.), James, Catharine (d.), Edward and
Amelia.
