CONNELL, James
(d.). No man in Minto occupied a higher place in the estimation of the people
than this old pioneer. He was b. near Cummock, Scot., in 1824, being raised
and educated there. In April, 1851, he m. Janet Peden, and the following month
they started out on their bridal trip to seek a home in Canada. They sailed
on the barque "California," and landed in Montreal, June 17, 1851. They came
by boat to Hamilton, and by team to Guelph Tp., where they remained until the
land sale in Minto, in 1854, when they came up and secured 200 acres, lots 38
and 39, con. 4, and there settled, making a small clearing and erecting a log
house. Joseph Lavery came with them and took up land just below, on con. 5.
William Bride had already set. on lot 40,
James Connell cleared his farm and lived on it until 1886, when he sold it to his son, James, Jr., and moved to lot 35, con. 5, and in 1895 removed to Harriston and retired from active business. He d. June 27, 1901, in his 77th year. The late James Connell was a sterling citizen in all that the name implies. He was an Elder in the Pres. church; was one of the founders of Knox Church, and later of Guthrie's Church in Harriston. He was promoter, Director, Treas. and salesman of. the Harriston Cheese and Butter Mfg. Co. He was Sec'y-Treas. of S.S. No. 3 for over thirty years, and was Councillor and Reeve of Minto for many years, enjoying during his long and useful life the confidence and respect of the people. Of his family of nine children, three are deceased. Two, James, Jr., and Albert P., are substantial farmers of Minto, William, Mrs. Wm. Thomson, Mrs. John McMurchy, and Margaret in the N.-W. James, Jr., m. Margaret Wait, March 7, 1894. Issue: James P., Margaret R., and Robert W. He owns the original homestead, which he purchased from his father in 1886, on which he has a handsome brick residence, first class outbuildings, and all the modern improvements and conveniences. This has all been accomplished by his own industry. The farms as well as the improvements on the fourth line are said to be the beat in Minto, and the Connell farms are among the most valuable. James, Jr., makes a specialty of Shorthorn cattle. Albert P. Connell m. Lavinia Wilkin. Issue: Gladys M., John and Marjorie J. He owns 160 acres, lots 34 and 35, con. 5, where he resides.
