COBER, Peter (d.). Came to Canada with his parents from Pennsylvania. They were the fifth family on Yonge St. above Toronto, on the second farm north of Thornhill English church. They were of German descent. About the age of 26 he united with the church known as Dunkards, or Brethren. He was, soon after, elected to the ministry, and some years after as Bishop or Elder. He was a faithful pioneer preacher of the Gospel, travelling over hills and valleys on horseback, and on foot over rough bush roads, without the slightest pecuniary remuneration. He was looked up to as a father among his own denomination in Canada, and was deeply loved by the congregations in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana, which he often visited. Though obliged to labor hard in clearing his farm, and supporting his family, he was ever a friend with the poor and needy, and was loved and respected by all who knew him. He d. at his homestead in Vaughan, at the advanced age of 83.

Nicholas P., son of the above, was b. in Vaughan Tp. York Co., in 1822, d. age 82 years 4 months and 23 days. He was m. in 1843, to Magdalena Fisher, and then moved to Puslinch Tp., where he had received 100 acres from his father, and with his life partner, started a home. He worked hard chopping, logging, and clearing his farm, until 1848, when he rented his farm, and purchased a saw-mill, with 11 acres of land and water power on the 2nd con. of Vaughan. In 1862, he sold this property, and returned to his farm in Puslinch, and bought 50 acres additional in the 2nd con. A few years later, he purchased 100 acres, in Sanilac Co., Mich., and still later, 160 acres in Lapeer Co., Mich. Later on he bought one acre in Hespeler, upon which he built some houses, and retired.

Mr. Cober was a member of the United Brethren church, and a Reformer in politics. He was a very successful man; a good mechanic and wheelwright, an industrious, skilful man, who could turn his hand to any kind of work. After his retirement he remained in Hespeler until his death, having the respect and confidence of all who knew him. Issue: Noah, Mrs. John Goudie, Sanilac Co., Mich.; Mary, with her mother in Hespeler; Jerry, in. Rachel Strome, living in Hespeler, and Elizabeth, d. 1872.

Noah Cober, was b. in Puslinch Tp., where his father was a pioneer, in 1843. At two years of age he went, with his parents, to Vaughan Tp., York Co., where his father had a sawmill. In 1862 he returned to Puslinch with his father, and farmed on lot 5, con. 3. In 1870, he came to Maryborough, and started a saw-mill on lot 10, con. 3, where he owns 206 acres, and with his sons, operates the mill. He has a natural taste for machinery, and- loves to be about it. He has been very successful, and is considered one of the best men in the district. He has always been industrious, and like all the Germans, thrifty, and is very hospitable. He has never held office, except several times as Returning Officer at Parliamentary elections, and at the time of the last census, when he was prevailed upon, after several refusals, to accept the office of census taker for his polling sub-division. He has recently rented his farm to his son-in-law, William Kenney, with the intention of retiring to Hespeler, but still operating his saw-mill. In religion he is a Mennonite, and politically an Independent.

In 1868, he in. Elizabeth Strome, who d. in 1906. Issue: William, Stratford; Andrew, B.C.; Benjamin, Peel; Oliver, Washington, U.S.; Mrs. W. Kenney, and Minerva.
