CLEGHORN Family, The. The founder of this respected family, in Canada, was the late John Cleghorn, who was b. in Roxburghshire, Scot., in 1768, and came to the "Paisley Block" in 1831, where he purchased and settled on 100 acres, which is still owned by his descendants. Only a few settlers had preceded him, and the country was new and wild. He had m. Isabella Oliver in Scot., she d. in 1851, age 74, and their children who lived and came with them to their bush farm, were: Thomas, John Jr., William, Robert, Oliver, d. unm., 1847, age 35, and James.

The father, with the assistance of his sons, soon made a small clearing, and erected a log house, in which the family found shelter, and were made comfortable, and they then went to work with a will to clear the farm. The late John Cleghorn only lived a few years after coming to the settlement, he d. March 6, 1842, age 73. He is said to have been a man of sterling integrity and great perseverance, and his demise was largely attributable to the latter.

Thomas, b. in Scot., 1801, d. 1883. He m. Agnes Mathewson, and left no issue.

John, Jr., b. Scot., 1802, d. 1879. He m. Christina Brydon, she was b. 1807, d. 1881. They set. on the town line, Guelph Tp., where they raised their family and prospered. He had assisted in clearing his father's farm, as well as clearing his own, and was held in high esteem. Issue: Mrs. George Elliott, John, 3rd, d. unm.; Thomas, Mrs. George Hamilton, Mrs. Thomas Manderson, Oliver, Mrs. Wm. Fisk, and Robert, Jr., d. unm. Of this branch, Thomas was b. on the "Paisley Block" farm, in 1839. He m. Ellen Buchan, and at the age of 28 went to West Garafraxa, and started life on his own account. In 1873, he sold out and purchased a farm on lot 3, con. A., Pilkington, where he has since resided. From a small beginning, he has become one of the most prosperous and influential citizens of the township. Besides purchasing other property, and starting his sons in life, he has brought his home farm to a high state of cultivation and efficiency. He was an Elder of the Pres. church for some years, and in municipal office, he was Councillor for two years, and Deputy Reeve for one year. Issue: Mrs. Benjamin Bye, Mrs. Jacob Bye, John T., who m. Mary Quarry, and owns 100 acres in Pilkington, lot 2, con. 7. Issue: Jennie, and Elsie; George, who owns 200 acres in Woolwich, where he resides; Robert, d., and Mary. Mr. Cleghorn m. for his second wife, Elizabeth Fries. Issue: James.

William, b. Scot., 1809, d. 1897, age 88. He m. Ann Anderson and was a prosperous farmer in the Paisley Block. Issue: John, Helen, Lydia, and Thomas.

Robert, b. Scot., 1811, d. 1904, m. Mary Quarry, in 1840, and set. in the "Paisley Block." He purchased "Glen Farm," lot 11, con. 4, B., in 1838 or 1839, and made a small clearing, erecting a log house, which is still standing, and forms part of the present residence, and it was to this farm that he brought his bride, in 1840, and where they passed their long and useful lives. He was a successful farmer, and much respected citizen. Issue: Mrs. John McCorkindale, Mrs. Alex. McMaster, John W., James O., and Mrs. Lindsay. His eldest son, John W., m. Annie McCorkindale, d. Issue: Archibald. He is a prosperous farmer in the "Paisley Block," and succeeded to the "Glen Farm." James O., m. Elizabeth McCorkindale. He is a general merchant, and Postmaster at Mosborough. Issue: Elizabeth, Annie, and Agnes.

James, b. Scot., 1817, d. 1877, was nearly fourteen years of age when he came with his family to Guelph Tp. He m. Agnes Quarry, and was very successful, owning at the time of his death 250 acres in the "Paisley Block," where he always resided, besides other property. Issue: Mrs. Robert Porter, Isabella, John O., Agnes, d. unm.; James, and Mrs. James Laidlaw, Jr. Of this branch, John O., m. Euphemia Derby, and owns 125 acres of the old homestead. Issue: Catherine, James G., John D., Robert R., and William A.

James, the second son is unm., and owns the old homestead, of 125 acres; his sister Isabella keeps house for him.

As will be seen, the Cleghorn family are connected by marriage, and otherwise, with the best families in the "Paisley Block." From the beginning they have represented the best citizenship in the country. They have been consistent members of the Presbyterian church, and liberal contributers to the church and other worthy objects, and their influence in the community has always been of the best.
