CHESTER, Richard
, b. in Eng., and d. on St. Joseph Island, in 1888, at the age of 72. He was
a shoemaker by trade in Eng., and came to Canada in 1837 with his wife and one
daughter, stopping at Hamilton, where he worked for some time. After that in
Stratford, where, at that time, there was one store, a grist mill, a
distillery, and hotel. He was in Waterloo for one summer, and then worked in
Beverley Tp., going into partnership with one Leitch at Sheffield. He
belonged to the Anglican church, and was a Conservative in politics. He m.

Mrs. Richard Harkness, Montana; Benjamin, John, Waterloo Tp.; Richard, on St.
Joseph Island.
Benjamin was b. in Hamilton, but left home at 9 years of age, and worked for ten veers with a farmer in Blenheim Tp., after which, for two years, he worked for Duncan Gillis of Beverley, and in Waterloo for one year. He then came to Puslinch Tp., and rented Benjamin Newstead's farm for ten years; then purchased the Oaks farm, lot 8, rear con. 3, living there for nineteen years. In 1893 be bought 100 acres, lot 6, centre con. 3, where he has since lived. He is a Free Thinker, and in politics a Conservative. He has been Trustee for S. S. No. 12, for one year. He m. Catharine Hammett. Issue: Benjamin, Thomas, conductor of the Northern Pacific Railway in Montana; Catharine, Waterloo Tp.; Eliza, John, in Waterloo Tp.; Maria, in Hespeler; James (d.); William, Puslinch; Ethel, Bertha,' Martha, Richard, and Edward. Benjamin assists his father on the homestead. He is engaged in mixed farming. They have a first-class farm, and are very successful. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario.
