CHALMERS, James.
This
Minto pioneer was b. in Aberdeenshire, Scot., in 1820, where he was
raised and educated. In 1853, he came to Canada, settling in Galt, where
he remained four years, when he came to Minto, purchasing lot 24, con.
3. He built a log shanty, and while he was making a clearing, during the
following two years, he kept bachelor's hall. In 1859, he m. Agnes
Faulkner.
James Chalmers was a man of more than ordinary ability, and early took a leading part in the infant settlement. He never sought or held municipal office, but was one of the first promoters of the first Knox Pres. church, in Harriston, and always stood ready to lend a hand toward the betterment of the community. He d. in 1892, respected by all who know him. Of his children, William is an extensive thorough bred stock raiser near Brandon, James and John are also large farmers, and own 2,300 acres 15 miles south of Brandon, Man.; Dr. Robert K., is a practising physician in Minnesota; Joseph, runs the principal hardware store in Palmerston; David, and Thomas, in conjunction with Joseph, own it, and 300 acres of land in Minto, lots 23 and 27, con. 2, and lot 24, con. 3, which was the old homestead set. upon by their respected father, nearly fifty years ago. These farms are operated by David and Thomas, who make a specialty of Durham grade cattle and Clydesdale horses. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario.
