CARTER, Richard (d.). The late Richard Carter was b. in Somersetshire, Eng., in 1798, d. in Guelph, 1850. He m. 1819, Elizabeth Lamport, she was b. in Eng., 1798, d. in Guelph, 1886. In 1820 they came to the U. S. with the Lamports, and in New York State bought a team, and drove to Canada, fording the Grand River at Brantford, they went to Nissouri, where they remained two years. The country was, at this time, almost an unbroken forest, and after remaining in Nissouri two years, they made their way to Woodstock and farmed six years. In 1828 they came to Guelph- then but a hamlet- with their stock of 28 head of cattle, sold them and lived in Guelph two years, when he took up a new farm in the wilderness, lots 28 and 29, div. A., con. 4, and here commenced the active life of home-making in the bush. He was an energetic, active man, and ruined his health through hard work. He was identified with the Reform Party, and was one of the prominent Liberals of the day, and sympathized with Mackenzie in his contest with the Family Compact. He was a member of the Anglican church, and was highly respected as a man and a citizen. Issue: Mrs. Ceo. Morley, John (d. age 20), Mary A. (d. unm.) ; Thomas, Henry, Priscilla (d.) ; Louisa, Mrs. R. W. Sawtell, Mrs. Smith, Joseph, Mrs. John Ellis. Thomas, b. 1826, m. Ann Gowdy. Issue: Richard, in Fergus; Joseph, Frank, Edward, Mrs. Chas. Bruce, in Nebraska; Edith, Annie Jane, Mrs. Edwin Tolton, Mrs. Geo. Newstead, Mrs. George Shean. He is retired in Guelph.

Henry, b. in 1828, where William Sallow's blacksmith shop is now located, in Guelph City, being the second child b. in Guelph, was brought up on the Guelph Tp. homestead, and here lived until he sold his interest to his brother Joseph, and in 1863, purchased and settled on lot 17, con. 1, Eramosa, which he farmed successfully nineteen years, selling it at a large advance on the purchase price, when he purchased the William Bathgate Estate of 275 acres on the town line of Guelph Tp., on part of which his son, John L. Carter, now resides. In Eramosa he took an interest in municipal matters, being Councillor and Deputy Reeve, and in Guelph Tp., he was Councillor three years. He remained on the Guelph farm six years, when he retired to Guelph City, where be is enjoying the remaining years of his long and useful life. He m. first, Elizabeth Green (d.), and afterwards Miss McCarley. His son John L., was educated at the Rockwood Academy. He m. Mary Grierson. Issue: Henry, Jr., Lizzie, and Jennie. He makes a specialty of thoroughbred cattle and Leicester sheep. He was elected Councillor of Guelph Tp., in 1906.

Joseph, b. 1838, on the homestead, to which he succeeded (caring for his mother until her death.) He m. Anna E. Martin. As a farmer his specialty was fitting cattle for the market, in which he was very successful. He was School Trustee in Guelph Tp. for years, and has been an Alderman in Guelph City. He sold out his farm in 1872, and has since lived retired in the city.

As a family the Carters have been very successful financially, and all have a competency and are amongst the most respected citizens of the community.
