CARTER, James, Family, The , Puslinch. The late James Carter was b. in Eng., in 1769, and was 62 years old when he came, with his family, to Arkell, then called "Farnham Plains," in 1831. He took up 100 acres of land 9, part lots 3, 4, 5, and 6. This land was a part of the 1,800 acres which had been located by John Arkell, Sr. The late James Carter d. in 1856. Issue: Thomas, James, Jr., John, Mrs. John Hewer, all b. in Eng., and Mrs. Walter Cook, b. in Puslinch. Thomas, the eldest son, was b. in 1816; d. in 1881.He succeeded to the homestead after his father's death in 1856. This farm he practically cleared and put up the present buildings, which were considered at the time the best in Puslinch , if not in the county. The farm, which was also in a high state of cultivation, was assessed the highest of any, 100 acres in Puslinch. He m. Eliza, dau. of the late John Iles, pioneer of Puslinch Tp., mentioned elsewhere in this work. Issue: James 3rd., Mrs. Thomas Arkell, Mrs. John Arkell (d.) Mrs. Edward Rudd, John, William H., Thomas. Mrs. W. J. Laing, Daniel, Rachael (d.), Lizzie, Mrs. Matthews, and Mrs. A. J. Laing. Of this, branch: James 3rd, was b. on the homestead in 1848. He rented farms for some years, in Puslinch, and then moved to Guelph, where he was employed at the O. A. C. until 1892, and is now residing in Alma St. He m. Lydia A. dau. of George Rudd, the noted stockman. Issue: Thomas, J. Ernest, Annie, John (d.) ; Evan, Bertha, Blanche, Harold, May, Pearl, Fred and Elvin.

J. Ernest Carter, son of James Carter 3rd, b. in Arkell, 1873. In 1886, when Guelph was the centre of the wholesale seed business of Canada, he associated himself with W. H. Marcon, and later with Geo. Dudgeon, remaining with him until 1894. The following year he engaged as seed expert with Ex-Mayor James Hewer, the well-known seed merchant of Macdonnell St. This connection continued until 1902.when he commenced as bond salesman. Being successful in this work, Mr. Carter organized and promoted the British-American Development Company, which is one of the most successful of its class in Canada. Early in 1905 he opened an office in Tovell's Block, Upper Wyndham St. as Investment Broker, dealing in all classes of stocks, bonds, and debentures, but making a specialty of unlisted stocks. In this business Mr. Carter follows the most up-to-date methods, as is shown by the fact that he issues a monthly market letter to his numerous customers, who extend from coast to coast.

Mr. Carter takes an active interest in all matters pertaining to the welfare of the city, being a member of the Guelph Board of Trade. He was, for 13 years, connected with the 16th Field Battery and Brigade Staff, attending the School of Gunnery in Kingston for three months, and in 1903 retired, when he was Brigade Quartermaster. From his early days in business he has always been intensely interested in politics, and has been on the Executive of the South Wellington Young Conservative Association since 1895, being the first Vice-President in 1903, and President since Nov. 1904. He is Financial Secretary of Progress Lodge, I. O. O. F., of which he is a Past Grand. John, son of Thomas, who resides on the Brock road, remained on the home farm until he was 34 years old, when he purchased a farm in the Gore of Puslinch, which he later sold and bought the Keenan homestead on the Brock road, containing 88 acres. He makes a specialty of dairy farming, selling his milk at wholesale to city dealers. He m. Annie A. Goodings. Issue: Augustin, in Vancouver; Pearl, Flossie, Alvin, Beatrice, and Russell.

William H., b. on the Farnham homestead, which he later purchased from the estate, and is now engaged in mixed farming. He is a thorough farmer and is keeping up the name of the homestead as being one of the best farms in the county.
