CARTER, George Sr.
, was b. Yorkshire, Eng., 1815. He m. Jane Holmes in Eng. and came to Canada
in 1852, settling in Clark Township. In 1863 he came to Arthur, and purchased
lot 24, con. 8, upon which he lived and raised his family. Issue: Mrs. John
Such, set. Bomanville; Mrs. Charles Holmes, set. in Harwick; Hannah, d. unm.;
William (d. young); Mrs. James Candler, set. N.W.; Mrs. Wm. Robinson, set.
N.W. Mrs. Alex. Wilson, set. N.W. and George, Jr. The three last mentioned
were b. in Clark Tp. George Carter, Sr., took an active ,interest in church
matters both in Eng. and Canada, and for many, years was a class leader in the
Methodist church. His wife d. some years ago, and be is spending the sunset
of a well spent life at the home of his son George Carter, Jr., in Minto.
George Carter, Jr., m. Isabella Thorburn and owns 150 acres, lot 94, and part
of lot 93, con. C. Minto on which he resides. This farm is situated a little
over a mile from Harriston. It contains a stone residence and good
out-buildings, and is considered one of the best farms on the gravel road. Mr.
Carter is Elder in the Presbyterian church, School Trustee, and in politics,
a Liberal.
