CARAHER, Patrick
(d.). He was b. in Co. Lond., Ire., and came to Canada in 1830, set.
in York, now Toronto, and followed the blacksmith's trade. Soon after coming to
Canada he purchased the farm in Guelph Tp. of 159 acres, on lot 8, con. 8, and
his son Michael came and took possession in 1834. It was on this farm that
Patrick Caraher died at the age of 48 years. Michael was born in Co. Lond.,
Ire., in 1809, and was just of age when the family came to Canada, and a
vigorous young man of twenty-five years when he came as a pioneer to Guelph Tp.
He was a man of extraordinary energy and push, and with a good education. He
had never performed any manual labor until he came to Canada, but he quickly
accustomed himself to his new conditions, and took hold with a characteristic
and intelligent energy that won success, and accumulated a nice property,
leaving at the time of his death 274 acres of land, besides other property. It
might be mentioned that buying land in those days was easy, but paying for it
was much harder than in this day and time. The late Michael Caraher chopped
wood in Waterloo Co. at twelve cents per cord to get money to keep things
moving, and until he could raise a crop on the portions of his Guelph farm that
he cleared.
He was very fond of hunting and sports, and in early days had ample opportunity to gratify his tastes in that direction, as game was both abundant and troublesome. He was an excellent judge of horses, and owned and bred the best. He m. Sarah Cassin, of Puslinch. He d. in 1893, age 84 years, while she d. in 1894, age 84. They were members of the Roman Catholic Church. Issue: Patrick, Jr., d. unm., age 34, John, Morgan, Maggie, Bernard, Michael, Jr., Hugh, Thomas, Mary, Mrs. Thomas Williams, Sarah, Alice, Annie and James. Of this family Hugh is the only one to follow his father's occupation in Guelph Tp. He owns the old original Caraher farm of 159 acres, and here resides. He m. Miss Minnie Smallhorn. He makes a specialty of thoroughbred Durham shorthorns, and also raises standard bred carriage horses. He has taken prized on both at the Guelph Central and other Agricultural fairs.
