CALLFAS, John
(d.). This old pioneer of' Puslinch was b. Wittenburg, Germany, and settled
in Puslinch with his family, where they were among the very first settlers of
the township, and where the family has always borne a respected name. His son,
the late Christopher Callfas, was b. in Germany, and came to Canada with his
parents in early youth. He m. Sophia Motz, dau. of Jacob Motz, b. in Alsace,
who was a soldier in Napoleon's army, and fought in the battle of Waterloo.
Charles F. Callfas, the subject of this sketch, is A son of the latter and a
grand-son of the late John Callfas. He was b. in Puslineh in 1851, and raised
there. In 1874 he m. Christina Werner. He had just returned from a two
years' stay at Crediton, Huron Co., where he learned the brick business, which
he pursued for three years at Morriston. In 1876 he entered the employ of W.
L. Smith, at Drew, and two years later made a contract with his employer to
make bricks by the thousand at a stipulated price. In 1890 they formed a
co-partnership under the firm name of Smith and Callfas, which has since been
continued. They do an extensive and very prosperous business. After the
death of his first wife he m. in 1886 Lizzie Drummond. The family belong to
the Methodist church, and in polities Mr. Callfas is a Conservative. His only
son, Henry, is in the employ of the firm as engineer.
