BUTTERWORTH, James
d. in 1896, age 90. He was a miller by trade, and came to Canada and worked
at Fraser's Mills, in Glengarry Co. He came to Maryborough Tp. in 1848, and
had one York shilling when he arrived. He bought a number of farms in Peel
and Maryborough, clearing a few acres, and then selling them, and in this way
made some money. After disposing of his farms he retired to Moorefield, where
he lived until his death. He was a Methodist, and a Reformer in politics,
always refusing to take municipal office. He m. Isabella Hunter Brown.
Issue: Mrs. Wm. Waite (d.), Dakota; Mrs. John Halborn, Belmont, Ont.; John;
Mrs. Edward Holburn, East Luther Tp.; Mrs. Joel Kiteley (d.), con. 11; James
d. in infancy in England. John, b. probably in Glengarry Co., in 1842, was six
years old when he came with his parents to Maryborough. He made his start by
renting 25 acres from his father, and later bought 200 acres, lot 11, con.
10, which he held for about 20 years. In 1903 he sold it and bought 100
acres, the west half of lot 9, con. 11, where he now lives. He has a fine
farm and first class buildings. He is interested in church work, being
Trustee for years, and also Supt. of the Sunday School at Bethesda Methodist
Church. In politics he is a Reformer. He m. Mary Ann Bentley. Issue: Mrs.
