BURNS, Thomas (d.), b. Ayrshire, Scot. 1775; d. 1861. He came to Canada in 1820, and set. in Esquesing. He was a weaver by trade, and a man of great personal activity. He possessed himself of 700 acres of land in Esquesing, and 500 in Eramosa, which was divided among his sons. He m. Janet Wallace, who d. in 1826. Issue: Alexander, John and Thomas.

Alexander, b. Scot., 1807; d. 1890. He set. in Eramosa in 1826, on lot 3, con. 6, and m. Margaret Aitken in 1830. His first grist he carried twelve miles to the Glen on his back. His second grist was taken to Allan's Mills, Guelph, and he was forced to cut a road through the bush to reach it. He was a successful man, of rather retired habits; of strict integrity, and had the confidence of the community. He was one of the promoters of the Pres. Church at Rockwood in 1861. Issue: Elizabeth, b. 1832; Thomas, b. 1834 (d.) ; Alexander, Jr., b. 1836 (d. young) ; Andrew, b. 1838 (d.) ; Alexander, b. 1843; John W., b. 1846; Robert, b. 1848 (d.) ; and William, b. 1851. John Burns, b. 1805, was a graduate of Edinburgh University, and was editor of the Record, in Toronto, and was a promoter of the Pres. Church in Acton. Thomas, b. 1811, lived and d. in Acton.

Alexander, b. 1843, owns 150 acres, lot 4, con. 7, Eramosa, where he carries on mixed farming, making a specialty of thoroughbred cattle, of which he has the best. He has been m. twice, first to Sarah Hill, and second to Catherine Ferguson. Issue: Margaret, Elizabeth, Alexander, Jr., Mary, Anna, Beatrice, Melvin, Ada and Norman. John W., b. 1846, m. Martha McMackon. Issue: William I., Sadie and Charles E. He has always lived on the old homestead. William, b. 1851, owns 150 acres, lot 5, con. 7. He m. first, Elizabeth McQueen; second Euphemia Ferguson. Issue: Bella, Robert (d.), Gertrude, John A. (d.) ; third wife, Ellen Dickieson.
