BURK, William B.
, was b. in Queen's Co., N.B., in 1796, and d. in 1872. He was a pioneer in
York Co., settling there among the first, when it was known as "Muddy York."
He owned 100 acres of the best land in Scarborough Tp., and carried on mixed
farming. Mr. Burk took part in the Mackenzie Rebellion. He was a member of
the English church and a Conservative, and was held in high esteem by all who
knew him. He m. Sarah Sypher, also of New Brunswick. They had eight
children, four of whom are living; viz.: Mrs. Harrington, in Markham, York
Co.; Richard, in Grey Co.; Mrs. Peter McKenzie, on the Burk homestead in
Scarborough Tp.; and David S. David S., b. Scarborough, 1839, came to Fergus
in 1871, and went into the butchering business, which he conducted
successfully for some years. He has practically retired from active business,
and has a home beautifully situated overlooking the Grand River. Mr. Burk was
a Town Councillor for some years. He is a member of the English church and a
Conservative. He m. Martha Dick, dau. of John Dick, of York Co. Issue:
Morley, Ernest, Ethel, Frederick, George, and Victor. All of the family have
musical talent, and either sing, or play some instrument.
