BUCHANNAN, Robert
(d.), whose portrait appears on another page of this work, was the son of
the late Walter Buchannan, and was b. in Paisley, Scot., in 1819. He came
with his father to Canada in 1849. He had received a good education in Scot.,
and had also learned the cabinet makers' trade, although he did not pursue
this calling to any extent after coming to Canada. He purchased 190 acres,
lots 11, 12 and 13, con. 5, Puslinch Tp., where he set. He was a man far
above the ordinary, and soon made himself felt in the community, where he
became one of its most prosperous and influential citizens. He took an active
interest in everything for the betterment of society. He was one of the
promoters, and was President of the Puslinch Farmers' Club for many years.
This was the initial Farmers' Institute in Ontario, from which all of the
others have taken pattern. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, and
was a staunch Liberal. While he had decided opinions on political, as well as
on all other matters, he never sought municipal honours, and outside of School
Trustee, never held office, although often urged to do so. He m. Mary J.
Budgeon, and they had the following issue: Agnes, Mary, Walter W., James R.,
and Lydia (d. unm.). He d. in 1902, age 83 years, while his wife d. in 1892,
age 56 years.
Walter W. was b. and raised on the Puslinch homestead, and with the other members of the family was educated at the "Paisley Block" -School, No. 6. He m. Elizabeth Amos. Issue: Robert, Margaret and Gilbert A. He is one of the most substantial farmers on the Waterloo road, Guelph Tp., where he owns 185 acres. He was President of the Puslinch Agricultural Society for one year, and has been a Director, and Secretary and Treasurer of the Puslinch Farmers' Club and Co. Wellington Farmers' Institute, which has given him a wide acquaintance. James R. owns the old homestead (190 acres), where he was b. and has always resided. He m. Charlotte Evans. Issue: Laura. Like the others in the family, he is a member of the Pres. Church, and in politics a Liberal, and is a successful and substantial citizen. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario.
