BRUCE, George
(d.). This old pioneer of Guelph Tp. was b. in Wick, Scot., and came to
Canada in 1836, purchasing and settling on lot 15, con. 1. This farm he
cleared and lived upon until his death at the age of 73 years. He m.
Elizabeth Taylor, and of their family of fourteen children only one, John,
remained in Guelph Tp. John Bruce, b. in Scot., 1826, came to Canada and Guelph
Tp. with his parents when but ten years of age. He was raised on the Bruce
farm, and m. Mary Scroggie. It is said that his cash capital when he m.
was 25c., but he was an energetic man, and by diligent industry accumulated a
substantial property, which he left to his descendants at the time of his
death. Issue: Mrs. Thomas Randall. George, John. Mrs. George Broadfoot,
James, Mrs. Samuel Broadfoot, Isabella, William (d.), Margaret, Donald,
Baxter, Stewart, Robert, Alexander and George. Of this family, George set. in
Cal.; John (d.). Baxter, in Sarnia; Stewart, in Eramosa; Donald is a
prosperous, farmer in Guelph Tp., where he owns 148 acres, lots 9, 10 and 11,
con. 9; Robert, in U.S.; Alexander, a farmer in Peel Tp. and James, a farmer
in Guelph Tp.
