BROOKS, Robert
, b. in Lincolnshire, Eng.; d. at 58 years of age. He came to Canada
in 1848, and lived for six years in the Gore of Toronto and in Chinguacousy Tp.
In 1854 he came to Maryborough Tp. and set. on 10th line from Drayton. The road
was just slashed, and was impassable for teams. He set. on the east half of lot
5, con. 11, which was owned by William Oliver. There were a few acres cleared
on it, and Mr. Brooks finished clearing it. Later he bought an acre, lot 7,
con. 10, and lived there until his death. He never held office of any kind. He
was a Methodist and a Reformer. He m. Rebecca Kyme. Issue: Mrs. Wm.
Oliver, Melancthon Tp.; Thomas (d.), Caledon Tp.; Austin, Arthur Tp.; and
George. George, b. 1844, came to Canada in 1848, and was ten years old
when he came to Maryborough in 1854. He worked for a number of years on railway
construction work, and had contracts for bridge work, approaches and abutments.
He had the contract for all the bridges on the G. T. R. between Milverton and
Wiarton. He still takes contracts for bridge work. He owns 152 acres, part of
lot 4, con. 10, which he rents to his son-in-law, Thomas Allin. He
also owns the house, and lot of two acres, part of north half of east half
of lot 4, con. 10, on which he lives. He was Township Asessor for six years,
and has been in the Township Council for four years. He is a self educated man,
and noted for doing with heart and soul what ever he goes at. He is Master of
L.O.L. 645, Moorefield and is an enthusiastic Orangeman. In religious views he
is a Methodist, and a Conservative politically. He m. Susannah Schammerhorn,
whose family came to Maryborough in 1853. Issue: Mrs. Thos. Allin, on the
Brooks farm, and Mrs. Wm. Grosshaw, Michigan.
