BROOKS, John
(d.), b. Manchester, Eng., 1828. He learned the marble cutter's trade,
and pursued it in Vermont for some years, and also in Canada after settling
in Rockwood in 1848. He drilled the cable holes for the first suspension
bridge at Niagara Falls. In 1881 he embarked in farming in Eramosa, which he
followed for fourteen years, when he retired to Guelph City, where he died in
1902, age 74 years. He m. Mary Hill of the pioneer Hill family of
Eramosa, and sister of James J. Hill, the U. S. railway magnate. She was a
woman of extraordinary cleverness, inherited from a clever ancestry. They
raised a large family, who have m. into and are connected with some of
the best families in the district. She d. in 1905, age 78 years. Issue:
Mrs. W. D. Hamilton, James, Mrs. W. B. Dryden, Mrs. Andrew Mutrie, Louise (d.
age 26), Mrs. James O'Brien, Mrs. Alfred Farrow, John T., Robert A., George,
Mrs. Lucius Farrow, Emma and Celia.
James m. Margaret Quirk, set. Guelph City. Issue: Arthur, Beatrice, Retta, and Louise. John T. m. Louise Farrow, set. Eramosa. Issue: Sadie and Gladys. Robert A. m. Beatrice Bocards. He is an extensive farmer in Eramosa, on lots 20 and 21, con. 1. He is Trustee S.S. No. 3. Issue: Isabella and Monica. George m. Annie McQueen set. Guelph. Issue: Alexander, Agnes, and Henry.
