BROADFOOT, Samuel
, late of Nichol, was b. in the parish of Penpont, Dumfriesshire, Scot., in
1800, and d. in 1872. He was a shepherd in Scotland, and later with his
brother was in the mercantile business in England. He came to Canada in 1833
with his family, and set. in Nichol, on lot 10, con. 10, where he purchased
100 acres, being among the advance guard of hardy pioneers who first
penetrated the forest in Nichol.. He was a Presbyterian and a Conservative.
He m. Jean Hastings, who d. the year after coming to Canada. Issue: Mrs.
Thos. Black, Nichol; William, Mrs. Matthew Anderson, Fergus; John, James, d.
in infancy, and Thomas H., d. in infancy. In 1836 he m. Mary Haxton, who d. in
1884, age 72. Issue: Mrs. Alex. Anderson, d. Montana; Mrs. Dr. James Cowan,
Portage la Prairie; Mrs. Alex. McCready, Harriston; Thomas, Nichol;, Mrs.
Alex. Nichol; Mrs. Alex. Miller, Nichol; George, Man.; Mary, d. infancy; and
Samuel.
William, b. Ashburne, Derbyshire, Eng., 1823; d. 1901. He set. on lots 6 and 7, con. 4, Nichol, now owned by his son Walter S. He was a Protestant and a Conservative. He m. Mary Smith, b. 1843, d. 1893. Issue: Elizabeth Jane Allison, Margaret Jane Hastings, Isa and Mabel Mary and Walter Samuel, David Dixon and Thomas Black. John Broadfoot was b. in 1828, at Drumness, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scot., and d. in 1901, age 72. He started in life with nothing, and became a prominent and successful citizen. He was Trustee of Nichol for some years, Councillor for years, and Reeve for a time. He m. Ellen Munroe, who d. in 1900, age 69. Issue: Mrs. Alex. Martin. set. Mt. Forest; Bella, David M., Samuel, Janet (d.), Mrs. James Kilpatrick, Nichol; John H. and Mrs. (Rev.) R. B. Blyth, set. Wisconsin. James Broadfoot, b. Drumness, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scot., in 1831, son of the late Samuel Broadfoot, came to Canada with his parents in 1833. In 1857 he m. Ellen Kilpatrick, dau. of a pioneer. He set. for himself first in Nichol, on con. 3, and single-handed cleared his farm and erected good barns and a stone residence. In 1883 he sold out to John Ewens, and removed to his property of 250 acres in W. Garafraxa, on the boundary of Belwood., He has a fine property, and one of the highest in valuation in the township. Mr. Broadfoot has recently been appointed to the Commission of Peace. He is a Conservative in politics and has been one of the Managers of the Presbyterian Church. Issue: Mrs. Wm. Grain, set. in Man.; Mrs. Onslow Jupp (d.) ; Mrs. Alex. Currie, set. in Saskatchewan; Samuel W., Ellen M. set. on the homestead, and William (d. 21). Samuel W. m. Christina McDonald, dau. of Hugh McDonald, Township Treasurer, and set. on the homestead. Issue: James M. Samuel was b. in Nichol in 1853. He was educated in the schools of Nichol and Fergus, and later at Rockwood Academy. He followed farming on the homestead for some years, and taught in his old school from 1876 to 1880, when he received an appointment in the Inland Revenue Dept., and is now Accountant of the Division of Guelph, and Gas Inspector for the city of Guelph and town of Berlin. He is President and Chairman of the Board of Managers of St. Andrew's Church, and has been on the Guelph School Board. He m. Jane A. Bruce, dau. of a pioneer. Issue: Fred (d.), Haxton, J. Bruce,. druggist, Guelph; Samuel Rupert, and Letitia Elealeah. David M. Broadfoot, son of John Broadfoot, owns and resides on lot 5, con. 4, of Nichol. He was b. and brought up in the township, and was educated in the schools of Nichol and High School of Fergus. He joined the 30th Regiment as a private, and after two terms at the Military School, London, was gazetted Lieutenant in the 4th Flora Co., 30th Regt. In 1901 be was appointed Treasurer of Nichol Tp., which office be still holds. He m. Elizabeth Jamieson, dau. of Wm. Jamieson, of Nichol. Issue: Helen M. Samuel Broadfoot was b. on the old homestead in 1862. In 1898 be bought 100 acres, lot 10, con. 4, known as the Munroe farm, where he has since resided. He carries on mixed farming, and feeds each year n average of from 12 to 15 cattle for export. Like all the members of the Broadfoot family he is a prosperous and first class citizen, respected by all. He is a Presbyterian and a Conservative. In 1899 he m. Mary Green. Issue: Mary and James J. John H. Broadfoot, Jr. succeeded to the homestead of 160 acres, lots 6 and 7, con. 3, Nichol, upon his father's death. He is engaged in mixed farming and feeds a large number of cattle for market, using nearly all the grain raised on the place for the purpose. He is a good citizen, and up-to-date farmer, much respected in the neighbourhood. He is a Presbyterian, and a Conservative. He m. Jean Davidson, dau. of Peter Davidson of Nichol. Issue: John D. and Munro. Walter S. Broadfoot is a son of Wm. Broadfoot, and was b. in Nichol, 1867. Upon the death of his father he succeeded to the homestead of 145 acres, lots 6 and 7, con. 4, Nichol. He is engaged in mixed farming, feeding about 20 head of cattle each year for export. He is a prosperous farmer, and is of a somewhat retiring disposition: a Presbyterian and a Conservative, and is unmarried. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario.
