BOYD, Robert
(d.), b. Ayrshire, Scot., 1797; d. Guelph, 1880. He received a
liberaleducation in Scot. and came to the Paisley Black, as a pioneer, in
1830, wherehe purchased a farm and set. From an early date he took a prominent
part in theaffairs of the settlement, and being a writer of some note, his
poetic talentwas more than once laid under tribute toillustrate the primitive
life of thosedays. While he frequently contributed to the press, as well as
occupying thehonourary position ofBard of the St. Andrew and Caledonian
Societies, hepublished severalcreditable books. One of the ablest and best
known of hisproductions in"The Shanty:, which is a truthful and humorous
picture ofthoseunsophisticated times. He was also successful as a farmer. He
m.MargaretInglis, and left one son and one daughter. The latter is now
aresidentof the N.W.T. Mr. Boyd retired to Guelph in 1876, where he d.
fouryearlater.
