BOWLEY, Jesse
, late of Nichol, was b. in Yorkshire, Eng., in 1827, and d. in
1889, at the age of 62. He came to Canada in 1863, settling first
in Guelph, and in 1870 removed to Nichol, where he purchased 50
acres, on lot 18, con. 15, now occupied by J. J. Bowley. Mr. Bowley
brought very little with him, but made his won way successfully,
and prospered. He was a vigorous man, a good citizen, highly
respected; of a retiring disposition, and not fond of notoriety.
He was a Warden in the English church for some years, and
politically he was a Conservative. He m. Mary Trindy, who d. in
1899. Issue:Elijah (d.); Philip, Jesse, William, Frederick, David,
George, Mrs. John Robinson, set. in Guelph: Mrs. Alexander Watt,
set. in Guelph. Philip, m. Miss Barker, and set. in U.S.; Jesse,
m. Miss Ray, set. in Nichol; William m. Miss Cox, set. in Eramosa;
David, m. Miss McDonald, set. Manitoba; George, m. Miss Jotham,
and set. in Fergus. Frederick, was b. in Yorkshire, Eng., in1851,
and came to Canada with his father. He owns the farm of 100 acres in
Nichol, lot 17, con. 14. He has a good farm, and has made his own
way in the world. He carries on mixed farming and feeds cattle for
market. He is a Baptist, and a Conservative. He m. Mary J. Hodgins,
of Erin. Issue: William, Lila.
