BOND, John M. (d.). One of the oldest merchants in Guelph, was b. in Queen's Co., Ireland in 1837, coming to Toronto, Canada, in 1849. He was educated principally at the Provincial Model School, Toronto.

In 1852 he entered the empty of Rice, Lewis & Son, of Toronto where he learned his business. He came to Guelph in 1866, where, two years later, he opened up the hardware business, which, for thirty-seven years, was conducted successfully by him under the name of John M. Bond & Co. In 1905 this business was incorporated as a joint stock c. as the Bond Hardware Co., Ltd., with John M. Bond as President.

From its inception this hardware business has been the largest in the district, due entirely to the able management of Mr. Bond, who, as a business man and a citizen, took first rank in the community. He was a director of the Guelph General Hospital, and was one of the promoters of the Guelph Junction Railroad.

Aside from matters commercial, he was always closely associated with everything pertaining to the advancement of Guelph. He was a member of the Church of England and took an active part in church matters, being a member of the Corportation of Trinity University, Toronto; a member of the Dominion Synod, and also of the Synod of the Diocese of Niagara.

He was m. in 1870 to Harriet Ann Deane Parker, who died September 5th, 1882. On June 9th, 1885, he m. Florence Rose Grenside. His family consists of five children: one son and four daughters. The eldest daughter is m. to D.T. Symons, D.C.L., barrister, Toronto.

Mr. Bond d. in Montreal, April 17th, 1906.
