BLYTH, Alexander
(d.), was b. in Glasgow, Scot., 1807, and d. in Guelph Tp.
in 1872, age 65 years. He came to Canada in 1832, stopping in Quebec one
years, and in 1833 came to Guelph Tp. He m. Janet McDonald in 1834. She was
the dau. of the late Joseph McDonald and was thirteen years old when she went
with her parents from Scot. in the "Planet" to South America. She found
employment there in a bakery store kept by an Englishman, and remained
eighteen months, until she came with her parents to Guelph in 1827. While in
South American she learned the Spanish language. She d. in 1905, at the
advanced age of 92 years. After his marriage, Alexander Blyth opened the
first hotel in Guelph Tp. 38 years, and their hostelry was noted far and wide
for its excellence. The late Alexander Blyth was a Presbyterian and a
Conservative, and was in the Council of Guelph Tp. for a time. In business
he was successful, carrying on his farm of 135 acres as well as his hotel.
Issue: Colin M.; Alexander W.; Mrs. John Ellis; Robert; Joseph; Mary; John;
Charles and Mrs. William Beattie.
Colin M., is unm. Alexander W., is unm. And owns the old homestead of 135 acres where he was born in 1837, and has always lived. He is a well read man, and keeps abreast with the times. Robert, m. 1rst Harriet Siefred, and set. in Guelph Tp. Issue: Mary (d.); John (d.); and George. He later m. Mary Siefred. Issue: Sarah Lydia, Jessie and Colin M. Robert, d. 1898, age 56. Joseph, m. Margaret Armstrong, set. in Normanby, where he became a leading man, and was M.P.P. He d. in 1895, age 46. Charles, m. Christina Atkinson, set. Guelph Tp.
