BLACK, David
(d.), was b. in Perthshire, Scot. in 1820, and d. in 1901. His
father was one of the first settlers in Fergus, and kept the first hotel
there, of which he was proprietor at the time of the Mackenzie Rebellion.
David Black was a pioneer farmer in Garafraxa, and was a successful man. He
held the office of School Trustees, and was an active member of the
Presbyterian Church, and a Reformer. He m. Annie Munroe, a dau. of John
Munroe, a pioneer.
Hugh Black, his son, b. in Garafraxa, 1846, for over 25 years has been in the saw milling business at Fergus. He has held the offices of Councillor, and Deputy Reeve for Garafraxa, and has been on the Board of Education for years. In political views he is a Reformer. He takes a great interest in church work, and at this writing is sec.-treas. of Melville Pres. Church in Fergus. Mr. Black has been twice m.; his first wife was Isabella Gardner and after her death he m. Elizabeth Beatty of Fergus. There are nine children.
