ANDERSON, John
, registrar for North Wellington, was b. in the city of Toronto
in 1838. He moved to Streetsville with his parents when eleven years of age,
and attended the Grammar School there for several years. Afterwards he went
into the mercantile business, remaining in Streetsville until 1871. Later Mr.
Anderson became a citizen of Orangeville, and while there held several public
offices, and was for years a member of the Town Council. He early developed
exceptional business capacity, which with unusual talent, allied to a wide
experience, coupled with administrative ability made him the natural
selection of the governing power for the important office of Registrar, when
the county of Wellington was decided for registration purposed in 1871. This
position he has since filled, and he has proved himself to be a most valuable
official.
Mr. Anderson at the age of 18, took an active part in political contests, and is a fine platform speaker, witty and humorous, though capable of a stinging retort to an opponent in debate. His ability as a speaker was early recognized, and his services were in great demand. He was a prominent advocate for the Toronto, Gray and Bruce Railway, and assisted very materially in carrying bonus by-laws, in the counties of Peel, Cardwell, Grey, Wellington, Bruce and Huron. During his residence in Arthur, Mr. Anderson has been active in all its interests. He assisted in establishing a grain market, was President of Arthur Agricultural Society for years; has been a member of the High School Board since the establishment of the school, and was its chairman for over ten years. He was a prominent advocate in connection with the establishment of the High School, and has been a prominent member of the Trustee Department of the Educational Association for Ontario for over 15 years, and was its President for the year 1902. Personally Mr. Anderson is a most agreeable gentleman, a bright, pleasant and keen conversationist, a ready platform speaker, kind affable, and generous in spirit, a deep thinker, and has a wide acquaintance with public men of prominence. His charming residence "Roscrea," stands on an eminence overlooking the village of Arthur. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario.
