ANDERSON, James
(d.), b. Co. Fermanagh, Ire., 1816, d. 1892, age 76. He came
to Canada in 1836 and set. at Mono Mills. In 1850 he came to Arthur and
bought the right to his property of 135 acres, lots 3 and 4, O.S.R., from Mr.
Taylor. The late Mr. Anderson was one of the pioneer settlers of this part of
Arthur Tp. He was an expert in handling oxen, and with his team was in great
demand in those days, as oxen were largely used. He helped to clear the site
of the town of Mount Forest. When he came into possession of the homestead,
there was a small patch cleared and a shanty built. He finished the clearing
of this land, and raised a large family, making one of the best homes on the
O.S.R. (Owen Sound Road) He had to go to Fergus for all provisions, that
being the nearest mill He suffered all the hardships of the early days,
losing many of his crops from frost. The late Mr. Anderson was much respected
by the entire community, and was a man whose word was considered as good as
his bond, and was never sued in his life. He died leaving a valuable estate.
He was a Presbyterian and a Conservative, and held the office of School
Trustee. In 1852 he m. Alice Knox, of Mono Mills, who d. 1905, age 82. Issue:
William and John on the homestead; Andrew. (d.49); George, in Arthur; Mrs.
William Connor, Robert (d. 36); and James (d. young). William and John live
upon and own the homestead. They carry on mixed farming, and feed quite a
number for export cattle. They are very successful and are Presbyterian and
Conservatives. William has been School Trustee of his section for some time.
