AMOS Family. The immediate ancestor of this family was the late Gilbert Amos, Sr., barrister, who lived and d. in Hawick, Scot. His issue: was Walter, Robert, John, Gilbert, Jr., Mrs. John Pringle, and Mrs. John Wingfield.

The family were well educated and came to Canada and the "Paisley Black" in 1841, and purchased farms. Like many of the farms in the "Block", they are still in the family name. The Amos family arrived in Canada with small means, but some years later they received legacies to a considerable amount form the estate of their late mother. In the meantime they experienced all the vicissitudes of early pioneer life, and by dint of industry and frugality they had succeeded in making their clearings and getting a good start in the then infant settlement. They afterwards completed the clearing of their farms, and were prosperous and well-to-do.

Walter m. Caroline Welsford, and d. without issue. Robert, Sr., was b. Scot. 1821. A few years after coming to Canada he returned to Scotland and remained three years, and while there m. Margaret Turnbull. He followed farming successfully for many years, until he retired from active business, and set. in Galt in 1884. There he was for many years Elder of the Central Presbyterian church. He was a man of wide reading, strict integrity, and enjoyed the confidence and respect of the community at large. He d. at Galt in 1904, age 83. Issue: Robert, Jr., Thomas, John, George, Walter, Henry, Gilbert, Mrs. Thring, and Mrs. Orr. Of this family, Robert, Jr., is a leading man in Guelph Tp. , where he owns and farms 133 acres, going to some extent into thoroughbred cattle and Clydesdale horses. He was a member of the Guelph Tp. Council for some years, and has been School Trustee for twenty-one years, and Tax Collector for eleven years. He m. Margaret McFarlane, dau. of the late Duncan McFarlane of Puslinch. Issue: Mrs. Robert Armstrong, Mrs. Neil McPherson, Robert G., Walter L., and Loyal. The family are Presbyterians, and in politics Mr. Amos is a Liberal. Robert G. m. Alice Atkinson, and owns and farms 100 acres, lot 4, conc. 11 C., Guelph Tp. Thomas m. Jane Marshall, set. in Toronto.

John m. Janet Orr, et. Waterloo, where he is a leading citizen, and has been Councillor, Reeve and Assessor of Waterloo.

George, m. Ellen Adams, and set. in Halton Co. He is one of the leading Shorthorn breeders in Ontario.

Walter, Jr., m. Sarah McPherson. Is a V.S. at Owatonna, Minn.

Henry is a mechanical engineer in Chicago. Gilbert, m. Emma Valmer, set. Lasalle, Ills.

John, Sr., b. Scot., 1813, m. Jessie Simpson, and for many years ran his farm in the "Paisley Block." He retired and died in Guelph in 1897, age 83. Issue: Mrs. Joseph Tuck, Mrs. Richard Dickieson, Catherine, Mrs. Robert Spiers, Mrs. James McIntosh, and John.

Gilbert, Jr., b. Hawick, Scot., 1814, was raised and educated there. He m. Ann Dickieson (d.) Issue: Mary A. (d.); Gilbert, Margaret, Henry, and Mrs. Walter Buchanan. He was a well read man, and bright and active, up to the time of his death n March, 1906, in his 92nd year. He recounted seeing Sir Walter Scott on several occasions in his younger days, and his memory of events both in Scot. and Canada was an interesting theme to his large circle of friends and admirers. In fact he was one of the most striking personalities in the "Paisley Block". His portrait appears on another page of this work. Of his family Gilbert farms the old homestead, besides owning and farming 130 acres adjoining. He is unm. And makes a specialty of Durham Shorthorns and Leicester sheep, recorded.

Henry owns 100 acres, lot 6, con. 4 B. He m. Margaret Snodgrass. Issue: Elizabeth P., Jean, Margaret and Gilberta.
