ALLARDICE, Thomas Curzon ,
(d.), was b. at Murlingden, in Brechin, Forfarshire, Scot., in 1813. He was
educated as a physician, but his health failed him, and he came to Canada in
1835 with Thomas and John Vallintyne, coming direct to Fergus, where he
purchased lots 20 and 21, con. 14, 200 acres, in Nichol Tp. He cut the first
tree on his farm, and for some time went to Wellington Square for supplies as
well as going there to vote on one occasion. He enlisted in the militia
during the trouble of 1837-8 and later became Captain of the old militia. He
lived on his farm in Nichol until his death in 1888. He m. Robina, dau. of
Robert Kennedy, of Galloway. Issue: Annie M., in Fergus; William K. (d.);
Mrs. R. D. Farmer, Fergus; Robert and Thos. C., in Winnipeg. He was a man of
remarkable force of character, widely read, and on account of his superior
education occupied a very prominent place in the community. He was much
interested in educational matters, giving the land for the school of which he
was Trustee for many years. In religious matters he was a staunch
Presbyterian. His eldest son, William, also took a high place in the
community, being Township Councillor for some years, Director of the Central
Wellington Agr. Soc.; Secy. of the School Board. He was a member of the 30th
Battalion and had a reputation as a breeder of thoroughbred stock, and in
politics he was a Conservative.
