ALLAN, John F.
, b. in Co. Sligo, Ire, 1827. He came to Canada with his
parents in 184, set. first in Toronto Gore. Fourteen days after their arrival
in Canada the father was taken sick and d. , which left the responsibility
for the support of the mother and family on the two boys. They took care of
their mother until her death. In 1850 Mr. John F. Allan came to Arthur Tp.
And took up the present homestead of 299 acres, lot 12, con. 11, which was
all bush, from the Crown, for $2.50 per acre. He has never had any financial
help from any source, but has made all of his property by his own efforts.
The family had some money when they came to Canada, but sickness took it all.
They had to put up the first shanty, and experienced all the hardships of
pioneer life. Kenilworth was the nearest post office, and they had to bring
all of their provisions from Fergus by ox team.
Mr. Allan has now practically retires, and has the respect of the entire community. He is a member of the English church, and a Conservative. In 1854 he m. Ellen Morrison, who d. 1904, age 71. Issue: William and Robert, Man.; George, Arthur Tp.; John, on the homestead; Joseph in Arthur Tp., and Alfred at home. Joseph lived upon and owns 100 acres, lot 12, conc.10 of Arthur Tp. He is a successful farmer and a respected citizen; a member of the English church, and a Conservative. In 1897 he m. Reba Morrison. From: Historical Atlas of the County of Wellington, Ontario.
