ALLAN Family, The . Charles Allan was b. Perthshire, Scot., and d. in 1859, age 69. He came to Canada in 1835, and set. in Nichol, near Fergus, afterwards removing to Elora, going into business there. He represented North Wellington in the Dominion House of Commons, and d. on his way to Parliament in 1859 of heart failure.

Charles Allan, Jr., son of the above, was b. in Perthshire, Scot., and came to Canada with his father on 100acres, lots 6 and 7, conc. 13, Nichol. Previous to this he had been associated with Jackson and Davidson, Guelph, where he lived until he moved to Pilkington. He was a Liberal in politics, in which he took an active interest, and was Councillor for some years in Pilkington. In religion he was a Presbyterian and was on the Board of Managers of Knox Church, Elora. He retired to Elora in his later years. He m. Jane Hawkins. Issue: Charles W., m. Margaret Duff, dau. of Rev. Mr. Duff, and set. in Elora; David, Jemima, Susanna (d.). Arthur (d.), and Mary (d.).

David succeeded to the homestead, where he is engaged in mixed farming, and feeds cattle for export. He held the office of Tax Collector of Nichol for some years, and is an Elder of Knox church. Elora. In politics he is a Liberal. Since 1878 he has been active in military affairs, and in 1905 was gazetted Lieut.-Col. Of the 30th Regiment. He is highly respected, and one of the most popular men in the county. He m. Christina Archibald. Issue: Charles Martin, David Richardson, and Viola Marguerite; all at home.

David, brother of Charles Allan, was b. in Perthshire, Scot., in 1800, where he was brought up and received a good education. In 1836 he emigrated to Canada, settling in Nichol Township, where he purchased 100 acres of bush land, lot 17, conc. 15. This farm he cleared, and lived upon until 1879, when he passed away. The Allan family were prominent in Nichol and took an active and leading part in the affairs of the township. David Allan served many years as Councillor and Deputy Reeve. He was a first-class farmer and paid much attention to the raising of fine stock, being one of the pioneers in this line. His brother, Charles Allan, represented N. Wellington in the Dominion House of Commons.

David Allan m. Ann Ford. Issue: Mrs. James Rae, set. Garafraxa; Mrs. John Skeoch, set. Nichol; Mrs. Hugh Black, set. Nichol; Dr. Edward Allan, set. Arthur Village; David Jr. , m. Ellen Lillie, set. on homestead, Nichol; James m. Miss Hay, and became a wealthy rancher and d. in Montana; George m. Mill Mills, set. Montana; Mrs. James Black, set. Man.; and Charlotte, a trained nurse in Vancouver.

Dr. Edward Allan, son of David Allan, was b. in Nichol, 1844. He was educated at the Elora Grammar School, and graduated in medicine from Toronto University in 1869. He at once (1869) commenced the practice of his profession in Arthur, then a village of about 500 inhabitants, and he has been the leading practitioner here since. He was Reeve of Arthur Village for eight years, and Councillor nine years. He was largely instrumental in getting the High School established in there, and is at present Chairman of the High School Board. He was several years President of the Arthur Agr. Soc., and has been President of the N. Wellington Reform Assoc. He is the present postmaster of Arthur. He m. Kate Chinneck. Issue: Edward, Jr., who is a druggist in Victoria, B.C., and Annie, Pearl, Louisa and Katie at home.

David Allan, Jr., purchased the homestead from his brother James, and since then has acquired another 50 acres adjoining, making a first-class farm. He is very prosperous and highly respected. He is a Presbyterian and a Liberal. He m. Ellen Lillie (d.), of Nichol. Issue: David A., Edith, Ann, Lewis C., Ruby A. David A., m. Amy Martin, set. in Toronto. Issue: Alfred L.
