Local Woman Marries
Great-Grandson of U.S. President

"Of Miss Daly, it is needless for us to say anything. She is the youngest daughter of our esteemed townsman, James Daly, Esq.; Police Magistrate. Being an accomplished young lady, of pleasing manner, she will be quite an acquisition to the social circle of the North west capital."

NAPANEE - In 1888, at St. Mary Magdalene Church, Napanee's Frances Augusta Daly married Inspector Zachary Taylor Wood of the North-West Mounted Police.

The union would join together two great families in North American history. Frances Daly's UEL ancestors include Peter Daly, David Hartman, John Everett, Gilbert Purdy, Barnabas Day, John Shibley and Jacob Gordonier.

Inspector Wood's great-grandfather was General Zachary Taylor, 12th President of the United States. Wood's father was Colonel John Taylor Wood of the Confederate Navy. After the U.S. Civil War, Colonel Wood made his home in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Young Z.T. was born at Annapolis, Maryland in 1860.

Stuart Taylor Wood was born in Napanee on October 17th, 1889, son of Z.T. and Frances Wood. S.T. Wood was the Commissioner of the RCMP for thirteen years. He was a CMG (Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George). His father, who died in Asheville, North Carolina in 1915 was also a CMG and retired in poor health from the RCMP to the rank of Major.
