Shenston's Gazetteer (1852)
I was so impressed with the scope and attention to detail found in Shenston's publication that I decided to compile an index of names found in the book and make it available to interested individuals. Hopefully this index will assist researchers in some way.

I have made this index as accurate to the original text as possible. Surnames are as they appear in the manuscript itself. Abbreviated given names have been expanded in cases where the abbreviation was obvious. Please note that with only this manuscript in hand, it was often difficult to determine whether multiple mentions of one name referred to the same individual. In certain cases (e.g., where a name was mentioned more than once in the same context), I have included the multiple mentions in one index entry. Where any doubt existed, separate index entries were created for the same name. Hence, multiple index entries for one name MAY OR MAY NOT represent one individual. Furthermore, since this index is a snapshot of the people and events of Oxford County during 1852, and not a primary information source, items contained in the index are only as accurate as that found in Shenston's work. Consultation of primary sources is strongly recommended where details are unclear.

The Canada directory containing the names of the professional and business men of every description, in the cities, towns and principal villages of Canada : together with a complete post office directory of the province, a directory to public offices, officers and institutions, a variety of statistical and commercial tables, exhibiting the population, trade, revenue, expenditure, imports, exports, public works, etc., etc., of Canada, and a variety of other useful information brought down to November, 1851 / [compiled] by Robert W.S. Mackay. Publisher: J. Lovell [CIHM #29570]
This directory includes listings of businesses for most if not all of the cities, towns and villages found in Ontario and Quebec circa 1851. Entries relevant to Oxford County (including Burford and Oakland Townships) are now included in this Settler's index.
