I would like to have an addition placed on your Clubs Manitoulin Surname Register. My Great-Great Uncle & Methodist Circuit Rider, Rev. Almon Perry Lyons & his wife, Eliza Rebecca, was posted, by the Church, to the Gore Bay Circuit, for the 1880 season. Not only did he tend to the spiritual needs of his flock, but it
was also his mandate to increase that flock, by converting as many of the areas
inhabitants, as possible. He would have been a prominent member of the
community, where he would have presided over Baptisms, Marriages and Funeral
Services, etc. His name should appear in the research/genealogical records of
many of the Gore Bay area families.
But his most important contribution, during his short stay there,
was that he was responsible for starting the fund-raising for the establishment
of Gore Bays first permanent Methodist Church building. That building is still
in use today.
Unfortunately, his stay was cut short, as he contracted
consumption (tuberculosis) and they were forced to return to our families
homestead, in the hamlet of Woodville, in the Township of Sophiasburgh, here in
Prince Edward County.
He suffered a slow, painful death, finally passing away on June
16/1882, surrounded by his wife & family. His father then went to the nearby
Town of Picton, where he purchased a large family plot in the Glenwood
Cemetery. Rev. Lyons was buried there 2 days later, on June 18th. His Obituary
has the distinction of being the shortest one ever printed the Methodist
Advocate newspaper.
However, his story does not end there, as his childless widow, Eliza
Rebecca (Rowe) Lyons took up the cause, of the fund-raising for the Gore Bay
Methodist Church, and was successful in her efforts.
As a memorial, the late Rev. Lyons congregation took the
extraordinarily rare step of naming the new church building in his honour, now
known as Lyons Memorial United Church.
I am doing a research project on the life, and career of Rev. Lyons,
and am looking for possible new sources of information. I have already spent a
week at the United Church of Canada Archives. I have been able to dig up more
info on Rev. Lyons on my own, than what little they have.
Rev. Lyons riding boots were passed down through our family and are
now part of the collection of the Rose House Museum, of Prince Edward County.
You can find a photo of them in their on-line collection.
I have also been able to track down & acquire his original
framed June 17/1877 Certificate of Ordination, which is now one of my most
prized possessions.
Mrs. Geraldine Bould, of Gore Bay, has been most generous enough to
donate to me a copy of her book, The History of Lyons United Church, which
does mention his contributions to its founding.
By contacting the Manitoulin Genealogy Club, I am hoping that his
name might appear in the research/records of some of the members of your club.
As you probably already know, Ancestry.com, etc. does not list records, nor are
they searchable, by the name of the Minister, for Baptisms, Weddings,
Funerals, or other Public events, that he would have presided over, so finding
info on Rev. Lyons activities is proving to be far more difficult than your
usual genealogical search.
If his, or his wifes name has come up, in other peoples Gore Bay
area research/genealogical searches, I would ask that any info might be shared
with me.
Your, and your Clubs Members attention to this matter would be
greatly appreciated.
Yours truly, John Lyons Picton, Ont.email [email protected]
